First, before we explore all the nuances of this perfect tragedy, I'd like to thank our loyal reader Garit for tipping us to this story.

To begin:

At least 55 whales stranded on a beach near Cape Town were put down or died after rescue teams failed to return them to the ocean, a sea rescue institute said on Sunday.
"We don't know if any of those we managed to get back to the water had survived ... one of them just washed up at the rocks around the Kommetjie lighthouse this morning and this could continue over the week," spokesman Craig Lambinon said.

Marine scientists and volunteers worked all day to try to get the whales back into the water, but many were pushed back ashore by waves.

Rescuers had battled to keep the beached adults and calves wet and used earth-moving equipment to try to save them.

To make matters worse:

Scientists shot 42 of the false killer whales on Saturday and 13 others perished, possibly from internal injuries, at Kommetjie Beach, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said. (as a point of clarification they were forced to shoot those whales considered beyond saving)

And it appears to be a complete mystery why the whales did this:

Lambinon said it was unclear why the whales had come ashore early in the day and it was the first mass beaching of whales he knew of on the popular stretch of coast.

Here at the Perfect Tragedy blog it isn't the great mystery the baffled marine biologists seem to think it is. It's clearly one of two things:

1. A loathsome plot by a rival pod of whales. This is, generally speaking, unlikely because if you've watched any movies about animals you'd know they are mostly nice creatures with the purest of motives; that is, unless they are cats, hyenas, or gaunt lions next in line to the throne, but since none of those live in the ocean we have to assume it is mostly likely not option one that caused this mass beaching.

2. Rather, it is mostly likely that all these whales were members of a pod cult (not to be confused with current owners of iPods). This cult of whales experienced a psychology similar to the Jim Jones cult. Most likely their beliefs contained a heavy Apocolyptic ethos that infused this act of self destruction with a perceived virtue.

What does this information tell us about the attempts of the rescuers to save the whales?

It reveals to us the arrogance of the marine biologist and the citizen whale rescuer. First, who are we to tell another culture/race/for that matter species what they should or shouldn't believe. I mean haven't we learned anything from the past eight years of G.W. Bush? You can't run around the world telling people how to live no matter how destructive the belief is. You just end up making things worse. Here we are trying to deny them their paradise reinforcing the belief in other whales that humans will never stop telling them what to do, thus empowering the apocalyptic cults by perpetuating a belief that the only means to find control in their life is through mass suicides.

Stop rescuing the whales!!! They have rights!

Why was it axed to begin with, again I say, paying his campaign debts to the modern clergy.

. . . the National Education Association, have argued that the experimental program is poorly administered and that voucher recipients have not performed measurably better in their new schools.

In a March 6, 2009 letter to Obama, the NEA president Dennis Van Roekel called the D.C. program "an ongoing threat to public education in the District of Columbia" and urged Obama to "use your voice to help eliminate this threat" by opposing "any efforts to extend this ineffective program."

The Department of Education recently issued a three-year analysis of student achievement under the program that showed limited gains in reading and no significant progress in math. But the White House concluded that moving the children back to public schools amounted to an unnecessary disruption.

I ask you: if its good enough to extend and does just as well, even a little better, at educating the kids for less money, why not extend it indefinitely?

Romeike, his wife, Hannelore, and their children live in a modest duplex about 40 miles northeast of Knoxville while they seek political asylum here. They say they were persecuted for their evangelical Christian beliefs and homeschooling their children in Germany, where school attendance is compulsory.

When the Romeikes wouldn't comply with repeated orders to send the children to school, police came to their home one October morning in 2006 and took the children, crying and upset, to school.

My New Favorite Show

KINGS is my new favorite show. I don't know if it's for everyone, but I think it's awesome.

What makes it so awesome?

1. A loose literary/dramatic interpretation of the Old Testament story of David.
2. An alternate universe. What seems to be New York, but with an absolute monarch.
3. For the most part great acting.
4. And, Beautiful camera work. It is alone awesome to look at.

The first season is paid for, but the ratings haven't been so good. At least we should get the first season. Honestly, it feels like it should have been an HBO/Showtime/A&E drama.

No doubt it will be canceled along with a host of other fabulous shows (Brisco County Jr., Firefly, etc).

Both episodes aired so far are on Hulu.

For those of you who actually watch TV it's on Sunday at 9/8 central.

This is for Dan, Garit, and Davy. I know this is their favorite kind of blog:

Ashley and I went to get Addie's 6 month pictures from Angela McAllister, who hails from the swampy depths of Lehi, just as most of you who will read this do. She has a delightful apartment in the center of old residential Lehi -- right by Wine's Park -- I don't know how delightful that is during the height of summer festivities, but I'm sure on balance it's nice.

I don't know how many of you have had the pleasure of visiting her place, but, regarding home furnishing, she has one thing in particular I liked: her coffee table is an old trunk (like the picture; pictured trunk not actually Angela's). Now I don't know if it is actually an old trunk, but it looks old and that's what counts. I thought it was cleaver and the idea may not even be original. I certainly wouldn't know, home decor being way down on my list of priorities, my wife can attest that I would have a very spartan living space if I had my way.

On to the pictures:

She does amazing work with kids; though I like to think little Adelaide had a lot to do with it.
This picture perfectly captures the way Adelaide's cheeks border on becoming jowls.
She really like kisses too.These are some of my favorites. She loved this chair, which is very classy in and of itself (apparently the place to buy nice furniture is Tooele , UT). It was all we could do to get her to stop rocking back and forth holding the chair's arm and look at us.

Maybe Alanis Morissette will read this blog and learn what is and is not ironic: like "a black fly in your Chardonnay" not ironic, or "rain on your wedding day"umm not ironic, but I'm sure most of you now know the only ironic thing about the song is that it is a song about irony without ironic lyrics.

Now Campaign Financing Fraud

Chicago style politics have officially arrived (language warning -- cleaner option) .

So it seems that the Obama campaign has decided it is unnecessary to verify the addresses or even the names of those donating to his campaign online. Can you think of any reasons this could be a problem?

I can:

1. Suppose someone gets your credit card number and expiration date. Normally to do most anything online with that number you would need a valid billing address. Not at the Obama website.

2. Your campaign can violate contribution limits set by law. Since donations above $200 have to be reported individually to the FEC, a series of donation under $200 can be made under different names and addresses.

It's quite interesting and moving. A french journalist was able to interview some POWs and McCain was one of them.

"Being treated well" explained:

"French television reporter, Francois Chalais, recorded a five-minute interview with McCain in his hospital bed . . .
McCain later wrote that "Chihuahua [his North Vietnamese handler]," who was observing off-camera, was unhappy with his answers. He wanted McCain to express gratitude to his captors, but McCain refused, saying only that he was being "treated well." Chalais helped the prisoner by saying that he was happy with his answer. McCain later expressed regret that he had violated the code of conduct by talking about his ship and squadron number."

I've never failed to be impressed with John McCain the man. Not necessarily his politics. Yet, in terms of character the alternative to him is sad indeed.

"Unfortunately, her delay in providing this matching system leaves little time for election officials to act on questionable registrations," Bennett said in a statement. "Secretary Brunner should immediately issue a new directive providing clear guidance on how the boards should handle the mismatched voter data."

Add to that news this:

"An entire houseful of young, non-Ohioan Democrat activists have used the Brownlee Avenue address to register themselves to vote in the Buckeye State and secure absentee ballots under extremely shady circumstances — all while mobilizing a large effort to register thousands of others for absentee and early voting."

Now I'm certain not all of these voters are fraudulent. But, in Ohio it is more than conceivable that a couple hundred voters will decide the election. This must be remedied, and the passivity of of government officials in many of these states is beyond shameful -- disgraceful.

An NHS trust has spent more than £12,000 on private treatment for hospital staff because its own waiting times are too long. The money was used to bring in physiotherapists to help workers recover from muscular-skeletal injuries at West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds.

Bosses said it prevented them from leapfrogging NHS patients and enabled them to return to work more quickly.

However, the private treatment, which amounted to £12,116 for 271 appointments over the past year, was described by critics as “shocking”.

Mark Wallace of the TaxPayers’ Alliance said: “Their staff should have to wait like everybody else. Perhaps if they experienced it as their customers - that is the taxpayer - experienced it, they might be a little keener to improve their waiting times.”

Th only thing missing here is the recognition that it just isn't that they don't have to wait that causes long wait lists. It's the lack of competition. Why perform if there is no other option for those you serve?

According to STATSIndiana, In 2007, Indianapolis/Marion County had an estimated population of 876,804. Of that number 232,607 were below 18 years of age, for a total of 644,197 people in Marion County/Indianapolis 18 or over and thus eligible to vote. (Indiana allows felons to vote as long as they are not incarcerated).

So we have 644,197 people eligible to be registered in Marion County/Indianapolis, and 677,401 people registered. Congratulations go to Indianapolis for having 105% of its residents registered!

It should. This sort of activity threatens the foundation of our self government.

Don't know how many of you remember him. April probably does. His funeral was nice. It was amusing to see all of his post high school clubbing goth friends and the rest of us in our Sunday best. While fearsomely large and tall he was the biggest softy in the world.

iTunes is tyrannical proprietary piece of garbage and not to mention a bloated application -- die die die. That I have to burn and rip any song just to get a simple mp3 is ridiculous Let it End! Put a stake into the heart of that shambling monstrosity iTunes.

Last night my wife was kind enough to introduce me to the blessed wonder of Amazon mp3 dowloads. Look an mp3 that's all I wanted not some stupid mp4.

By the way, did you notice mp4s are a lot like a movies. Mp4 the sequel to Mp3 it must be bigger better cooler! But then like most sequels it totally isn't. Its just bigger bloated and corporate tasting.

Let iTunes die by a simple mp3 from Amazon!

Okay so let get this straight:

Gas prices are high not because of the supply and demand price relationship. Instead privately owned oil companies, which only control 10% of global oil reserves, are sitting "behind closed doors" and by fiat charging us exorbitant prices to "squeeze" us. I never knew.

Nationalized companies can avoid the law of supply and demand. You mean a nationalized company can just tell foreign governments to sell us their oil for less than the market price. That's awesome! I guess then it doesn't matter that we import 60% of our oil. We'll just tell them we'll buy it at cost. No problem!

Government regulation and increased corporate taxes will increase the oil supply and the refinery capacity of our nation. I guess all those taxes will go directly to building refineries, paying off politicians to allow more drilling, and fund the actual drilling of oil. Finally, the oil companies won't have the money to pay their lobbyists to influence politicians to stop them from drilling. Finally!

It really is a stroke of genius. Just do what Chavez does. By nationalizing oil companies we can stop those record profits -- those suck don't they? If we had done it back when he did we could have declining production and lower oil profits too. Behind the curve again. Stupid America. Well cheer up better late than never.

It's so nice to have the moral ambiguity of taking someone's private property cleared up for me. I mean we demand action! Screw the shareholders! Crap I own shares in a mutual fund that owns energy company stock! Nooooooooo! It's so complicated I want my government funded binki! Please just take care of me!

A Rand Corporation study says the Green River Formation, which covers parts of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming, has the largest known oil shale deposits in the world, holding from 1.5 to 1.8 trillion barrels of crude.

Of that, some 800 billion barrels are recoverable with current technology — roughly triple Saudi Arabia's current known reserves.

Nick Loris of the Heritage Foundation says: "If full-scale production begins within five years, the U.S. could completely end its dependence on OPEC by 2020." That's quite a forecast, given that nearly a half of our oil today comes from that monopoly.

Indeed, there is enough North American petroleum trapped in oil sands and shale rock to form our own OPEC.

While OPEC, the Saudis, and even the U.S. Congress are telling us to pound sand, at least one U.S. company wants to get energy from it.

Yet:

The Senate Appropriations Committee today narrowly defeated Sen. Wayne Allard's attempt to end a moratorium related to oil shale development in Colorado.

If you want to complain about high gas prices complain to Congress.
